To the Youth of Greece, to the Youth of Europe

The European Left Party is gathered today in Athens, in an extraordinary meeting of its Council of Chairpersons and the Executive Board, not only to express its complete solidarity with the uprising of the Greek youth, with the brother party Synaspismos, with SYRIZA and with all the left and democratic forces, but because the fight of the youth, the educational community and workers in Greece touched the hearts of the people and the youth in every corner of Europe.

However, the EL prefers to focus on what was brought into light by the uprising of the youth of Greece. More specifically in Europe, where many social and democratic rights have been conquered after big struggles, precarity constitutes a generalised condition of life and takes us many decades back. The reduction of social and democratic rights, and the increasing unemployment constitute the constitutive elements that compose the crisis that touches upon and concern the institutions and the total problem of democracy.

The forces that direct the European Union today and the forces that seek to play a master role in the current globalized capitalism, face the current crisis as a coincidental financial crisis, this is why they face it with urgent aid to the banks and with persistence to the neoliberal dogma of the Stability Pact, the Bolkenstein Directive, the Bologna Process and the Lisbon Strategy.

We believe that the crisis is deeper, with more permanent characteristics that concern the structures of economy, as well as the structures and the values of the European capitalism and global neoliberalism under the hegemony of the USA.

The economic crisis is only one extension of this generalised crisis. This crisis is expressed through the extensive social insecurity that shatters the dreams and the daily life of the people, particularly and mainly the youth.

It is expressed through the enormous enlargement of inequalities, the enlargement of the democratic deficits, the destruction of the environment, the reinforcement of repression mechanisms and the escalation of military aggressiveness. The murderous war in Gaza constitutes a glaring example.

The crisis of democracy is not simply expressed by the centralized and bureaucratic function of the institutions; it concerns mainly the lack of the possibility of the people to develop their action, their movements, and their possibility of controlling the decision-making centres, which decide for their life.

The youth of Greece reminded us with the most deafening way that the right to the dream does not constitute an unnecessary luxury, but an integral element of each society that wants to remain alive, that wants to seek and expect a life better than the one the previous generations have lived.

Those who hurried to incriminate the youth for violence and destruction should first abandon their hypocrisy and then look into the mirror of their conscience in order to discover their guilt.

They should first answer, and mainly to themselves, the question of why the spontaneous and the untamed juvenile rush should be faced with reasonable police repression.

Why should Alexis Grigoropoulos be a victim of the callousness of the state, which instead of offering resources for the new generation, increases the expenses for weapons?

If they answer honestly, they will find who the guilty party is for the blood that has been shed by a young and heavily wounded police officer.

We are not in Greece to teach lessons but to hear, and mostly we do not mean to teach lessons to the Greek people and to the movement of the Greek youth. We are here in order to be taught, in order to touch the visioning of the generation that was found in the streets. We are here because we are anxious about the future of the population and youth in every country of Europe. We are here because we want to express our solidarity with the Greek youth and to carry the teachings of their struggles to the people of our countries. We are here because we want to ensure the Greek population and the Greek youth that their struggles and their visions are also ours and that we understand what it means to stand up for our rights.

And we are stressing our commitment to contribute to the democratic refoundation of Europe. It is the defence of public space for every citizen who lives in Europe. It is the creation of a public sector that will ensure the public social goods and will constitute a growth that can bring the economy into full employment, and in the protection of the environment and in solidarity.

We are here in order to ensure you that our current and permanent objective is to put a barrier to the war and to consolidate peace in every corner of the planet.

We address the youth.

•    Do not stop dreaming, do not stop fighting. Hear the messages that come from the long history of people’s struggle for freedom, democracy and justice.

•    This is the wealth that has been bequeathed to you through the struggles of generations.

•    The European Left, following the ideas of universal freedom and democracy, of socialism and eradication of every form of exploitation sends you the warmest greetings.

•    The European Left supports the fight and the demands of the movement of the youth in Greece, which, to a large extent, are common with the corresponding demands throughout Europe.

•    We support and fight for the upgrade of the public and free education in all levels.

•    We support full employment and the increase of salaries, the right to a decent life.

•    We support the struggle for the protection and the enlargement of democratic rights and the protection of the environment.

•    We join our voice with those who do not have a voice (refugees and migrants) and support their fight for the right to a decent life.

Dear friends, young women and men, it is your right to revolt against everything that ruins your life.
Take your fate into your hands!

Urgent call to Greek people: Block the shipment of US arms to Israel through Greek port!

12 01 2009

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine calls upon the Greek movement, the Greek people and all international progressive forces to halt the planned shipment of U.S. arms to Israel from the Greek port of Astakos.

International media reports have revealed that the U.S. Navy is attempting to ship 325 20-foot containers of ammunition, over 3000 tons, in an emergency shipment of arms to aid the occupation in its ongoing war crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The PFLP is calling upon the people of the world, and particularly the Greek movement to act to stop this shipment of arms. The U.S. has been attempting to hire a merchant ship to transport the weaponry to the Israelis at Asdud port in mid- to late January.

This weaponry must not be allowed to enter the hands of the Israelis, where it will be used to massacre our people in Gaza! It must be stopped by all means! These bombs are going to be used in Israel’s wars – against Palestinians, Lebanese, Arabs, Iranians, and the people of the region.

This emergency shipment indicates that the occupier is demanding ever more weaponry in its futile war of massacres against the Palestinian people and the Palestinian resistance. The demand of the Palestinian people, the Arab people, and all progressive forces – including the progressive forces in the U.S. – is the international isolation and the end of all U.S. aid to Israel. The U.S. government, however is Israel’s strategic partner, and is committed to partnering with Israel in its massacres and crimes against our people. If they will not stop the arms shipment, the people of Greece and the people of the world must stop it for them!

The PFLP salutes the Greek people – your unconditional solidarity and your mass demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people have sent a strong and powerful message of support, combined with aid, volunteers, and action on the ground. Your own courageous struggles for justice have inspired us and people around the world.

We are calling upon:

1. All Greek companies and all shipping companies to refuse to carry any shipment of arms to Israel. Any shipping company who carries these weapons has the blood of the people of Gaza on its hands!
2. Greek workers and all port workers to refuse to load the cargo for any shipment of arms to Israel. The strong hands of Greek workers and Greek labor should not be sullied with this dangerous cargo!
3. The Greek government to prohibit the use of its port to ship arms to the occupation state massacringourpeople!
4. The Greek people, the Greek movement, and all international and progressive forces to take action to stop any such shipment from loading or leaving the port of Astakos! The PFLP is calling for your continuing unconditional solidarity and support to prevent the U.S. and Israel from using the land and ports of the Greek people a supply base for occupation, massacres, and crimes.
The Greek people have a proud history and present of struggle. The relationship between the Arab people and the Greek people is strong and powerful and we call upon you today to march with us once again toward victory and justice for the Palestinian people and block this arms shipment!

NEWS FROM STUDENTS-PUPILS DEMONSTRATION

13 12 2008

Huge demonstration today (10/12) started 1 p.m. in the centre of Athens, teachers union, students unions, more than one hundred high schools. The ages, from 13 to 60 and more.
The demonstration was very militant, with rage every time the special police forces (MAT) were in sight, in the side streets. No breaking of anything, only rage against the police, by the young pupils mostly. In front of Parliament, one hour after peaceful demonstration, the police started shooting again with huge amounts of tear gas and different chemicals. Hell in a sunny day. The tactics of the police is to suppress every demonstration, towards the end of it. The cause of all trouble, whenever there is trouble, is the provocative appearance or standing of contingents of special police forces.

About seven persons were arrested, most of them 13 or 14 years of age, some of them detained and released after a short time and the protest of citizens, parents and teachers. In total, more than 137 persons have been arrested, 100 of them immigrants. They are the ones who suffer the worst oppression and police brutality, mostly accused of stealing from the broken shops, usually without any proofs, but who needs proofs when we are in front of migrants?
Clashes with the police followed the demonstrations in many central roads, for many hours, with barricades of burning rubbish mostly or other materials. Clashes also happen every night around university buildings in Athens and Salonica.

The provocation against the people, the youth and the dead boy was escalated by the solicitor of the two policemen (one of them the executioner) who said that the whole thing is a “misunderstanding” against the policeman, who did not fire against the boy, but he fired in the air and the bullet was ostracized. He continued to say that the dead boy had been excluded from his
school for misconduct and other accusations against the dead. And all this despite tens of eye witnesses who say the opposite, that the policeman raised the gun at shoulder level and fired.
The spirit of the youth is unbreakable, the pupils go and encircle police stations in neighborhoods and in different cities, they close the roads for a short time and to every kind of activism.

The calendar fot the next few days:

Saturday 13, big antiracist demonstration in the framework of migrants days 10-18, in Thessaloniki.
Monday 1 o’clock, big appointment of school pupils outside the central police station, for protest and siege.

Monday afternoon demonstration in Athens, perhaps in other cities.
Wednesday, a day of protest all over the country, by the left wing party, SYRIZA.

Thursday 18, demonstration for migrants’ day in front of Parliament at 5 o’clock, 6.30 demonstration in Athens, in the framework of national day of action against police terror and against the government of blood.  The trades unions are pressured to participate, and many of them will participate, maybe not the central leaderships.

Monday 22, the General Confederation of Labour is preparing a rally in front of parliament against the budget, which is most probably going to be put on the vote. There are proposals again for a national strike.

On Sunday the students co-ordination committee is assembling for new decisions and new proposals of struggle.

More is to come

All activities from Europe are most helpful, the governments of Greece and Europe are afraid the uprising may become contagious, and we must do everything possible to make it contagious.

Greece: Demonstration going on in Athens at the moment

12 12 2008

The Athens students’ rally has turned into a massive demonstration and lots of pupils (14-16 years old ) are being arrested. At least one journalist was beaten up when he tried to stop these arrests. It is still going on.

Just for info – this protest was called by the Confederation of the education dpt – that means that students and pupils were in the streets with their teachers and university professors.

The protesters are accusing the police of being provocative!!
